Mathematics Faculty Named 2022 Simons Fellows

Three Cornell faculty have been named 2022 Simons Fellows in : Laurent Saloff-Coste, Michael Stillman, and Alex Townsend. The Simons Foundation website says, "The Simons Foundation congratulates the outstanding mathematicians and theoretical physicists who have been awarded Simons Fellowships in 2022. The Simons Fellows program extends academic leaves from one term to a full year, enabling recipients to focus solely on research for the long periods often necessary for significant advances. The foundation is proud to support the work of these distinguished scientists."

Professor Saloff-Coste will be based in Ithaca for the 2022-23 academic year, working on three main projects with his collaborators: Heat Kernel Reconstruction, Doubling on Compact Lie Groups, and Limit Theorems on Nilpotent Groups.

Professor Stillman will spend 2023 in Oxford, Stockholm, and Italy, continuing his research in computational algebraic geometry and collaborating with experts in these locations.

Professor Townsend will visit collaborators in Paris in Fall 2022 to work on an existing project. In Spring 2023, he will visit the University of Sydney Mathematical Research Institute.

Congratulations to the Fellows!
