'Form your own perspective'

Why did you choose Cornell?

I chose Cornell in part for its welcoming attitude toward people of diverse backgrounds like myself, and in part for its encouragement in engaging with a breadth of fields.

What is your main extracurricular activity and why is it important to you?

I write satire for CU Nooz. It has been rewarding creating things that can make people consider events or subjects from new angles in a supportive community that encourages you to take risks.

What have you accomplished as a Cornell student that you are most proud of?

I was part of the Bowers Undergraduate Research Experience, where I worked with Professor Daniel Kowal on developing Bayesian nonparametric statistical methods. I was proud of the progress I made in developing, analyzing and writing about a novel method.

How have your beliefs or perspectives changed since you first arrived at Cornell?

Observing the student culture at Cornell inspired me to become more agentic. I have learned the value of spending less time thinking and more time doing.

Who or what influenced your Cornell education the most?

Taking Introduction to Philosophy in my freshman year had a great influence on my Cornell education. Determinism was the first view I had encountered where I found myself spending lots of time outside of class considering the questions we discussed. The class ultimately inspired me to take on philosophy as a new major, changing my course of study.

If you were to offer advice to an incoming first-year student, what would you say?

It’s easy to get swept up in what everyone else is doing or thinking. Try to pause and reflect on whether those choices actually align with what you believe or value. Form your own perspective and then act on it with confidence.

Every year, our faculty nominate graduating Arts & Sciences students to be featured as part of our Extraordinary Journeys series. Read more about the Class of 2026.
