On November 4, 2022, members of the Cornell Computer Science community gathered to honor the life and work of Juris Hartmanis, founding chair of the Department of Computer Science. Hartmanis died July 29, 2022 at the age of 94.
One of the speakers was Mathematics Professor Anil Nerode, a long-time friend and colleague of Hartmanis. He recounted their early days of building up the Computer Science Department. They shared a vision of faculty from across the university with joint appointments in computer science.
